Self Generation Incentive Program (SGIP)

The Self Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) is the California program that pays incentives for behind the meter energy storage and other distributed generation, with monitoring and performance rules attached.

The California Public Utilities Commission sets the rules and the utilities and the Center for Sustainable Energy administer them. For nonresidential storage, half the incentive is paid over time based on measured discharge, so the program requires revenue grade metering, data reported by an approved Performance Data Provider, and verification that the system reduces greenhouse gas emissions. The SGIP Handbook is the governing document.
