Behind the Meter (BTM)
Behind the meter describes solar or storage installed on the customer’s side of the utility meter, serving the site’s own load and lowering its bill.
A behind the meter battery earns by changing what the meter records: shaving demand peaks, shifting consumption to cheap hours, and absorbing solar that would be exported. It can also provide backup. Its energy management system optimizes against the customer’s tariff rather than a wholesale market. Commercial and industrial storage is mostly behind the meter.
