Logan Light & Power Substation - Logan, UT
Background: Logan Light & Power (LLP) is a locally-owned public utility serving approximately 18,000 residential, commercial and industrial meters, including Utah State University.
LLP was awarded a grant from the American Public Power Association (APPA) Demonstration of Energy & Efficiency Developments (DEED) program for the demonstration of a battery energy storage system (BESS) to improve grid economics and resilience.
Solution: WATTMORE was chosen by Pine Gate Renewables to provide the following EMS services for a BESS installation at the LLP System Operations Control Center (SOCC):
Back-Up Power: Operate SOCC off-grid using the battery, solar panels and diesel generator
Peaking Plant: Operate in tandem with the natural gas turbines to model optimal peaking power plant deployment
Solar Shifting: Operate in tandem with the new on-site solar panels and/or remote LLP solar installations to model shifting solar generation to their evening peak
System Peak: Operate and model reducing the utility’s system peak
