Solar and Storage Monitoring Platforms Compared for C&I

A solar and storage monitoring platform for commercial and industrial sites brings production, consumption, battery state, and alarms from many sites and many inverter brands into one view. The platforms split by where the data comes from: a data logger on site that polls the equipment directly, or the inverter manufacturer’s own cloud, read through a published API. That choice decides resolution, independence from the manufacturer, and what happens when the manufacturer changes its terms. WATTMORE makes one of the products compared and says so.

  • Almost no vendor publishes list pricing for commercial monitoring. The ones that do price per site per year or per kWp per year, which is the scale to ask every vendor to quote in.

Who wrote this, and how to read it

WATTMORE builds Intellect EnFORM, a data acquisition system and monitoring platform for solar and storage sites. That is a reason to be careful with this page rather than a reason to skip it. Every claim below about another vendor comes from that vendor’s own product page, help center, developer documentation, or press release, linked in the sources, as read in September 2026. Where a vendor does not publish a fact, the table says not published rather than guessing. EnFORM is described from the same kind of material.

The table records what each vendor states in writing. A blank is a question to ask, not a verdict. Several vendors give different fleet figures on different pages and dates; the figure cited is the most recent one found.

Where does the data come from?

The first question for any monitoring platform is whether it reads the equipment or reads the manufacturer’s cloud. A logger based platform installs a data acquisition device on site that polls inverters, meters, weather sensors, and batteries over Modbus or SunSpec, stores readings locally, and forwards them to the cloud. It sees every device on the site at whatever resolution the logger is set to, works with any brand that speaks Modbus, keeps working through an internet outage, and can write setpoints back if the site needs curtailment or export limits. It costs hardware and an installation visit.

A portal aggregator reads the manufacturer’s own cloud, SolarEdge, Enphase, SMA, Fronius, Huawei, and so on, through the API that manufacturer publishes. It needs no hardware and can be connected in minutes, which is why it suits a portfolio of existing commercial rooftops, each installed with a different brand. Its resolution and its data fields are whatever the manufacturer offers, usually five or fifteen minute intervals, it is read only, and it depends on the manufacturer continuing to offer the API on acceptable terms. Several platforms do both: a logger where one is installed and an API import where one is not.

Which inverter manufacturers publish a monitoring API?

A portal aggregator is only as good as the APIs beneath it, and the terms vary more than most buyers expect. The table lists what each manufacturer’s developer documentation states about access, authentication, limits, and battery data. Limits and plans change; the source for each row is the manufacturer’s own page at the date of reading.

What separates the platforms in daily use?

Once the data is flowing, the differences are in what the platform does with an alarm. The stronger platforms suppress noise and turn what remains into work: Stem’s event manager claims a 50 percent reduction in alert noise with work order creation and CMMS integration, Omnidian claims up to 90 percent nuisance alert reduction with one click work orders, meteocontrol ships a ticket system with ticket statistics, and Solar-Log’s top tier adds a plant logbook with ticketing and task assignment. Clir and Raptor Maps focus on automated loss detection, benchmarking, and warranty claims for portfolio owners rather than on dispatching a technician.

Performance ratio is the metric lenders and incentive programs ask for, and it needs irradiance. Meteocontrol names performance ratio per IEC 61724 with satellite irradiance as a fallback, SMA and Solar-Log name it, and Clean Power Research’s SystemCheck estimates expected production from satellite irradiance alone with no site connection at all. A platform that only reads a manufacturer cloud has the production but not the irradiance, so performance ratio depends on a sensor on site or a satellite feed.

What does commercial monitoring cost?

Almost no vendor publishes commercial pricing. The exceptions set the scale. Sunvoy lists monitoring from 95 dollars per new residential system plus a monthly fee per legacy system, with API access from 500 dollars per month. Meteocontrol licenses VCOM by kWp and term, sold through resellers, without a public price. Solar-Log charges an annual fee by plant size with a thirty day trial. The manufacturer portals are free at the basic tier and charge for a professional tier: Enphase’s installer upgrade is 9.99 dollars per month, SMA’s professional package was 30 euros per year when last published. Stem sells five year monitoring terms and quotes hardware separately.

The comparable number for a commercial portfolio is the annual cost per site including hardware amortization, cellular connectivity where a logger is used, the API fees of any manufacturer cloud that charges them, and the platform’s own subscription. Ask every vendor to quote that number for the same ten sites.

Ten questions for a monitoring RFP

These are the questions the product pages do not answer, in roughly the order they decide a purchase.

  1. Logger or API for each site in the portfolio, and what does the platform do for a site whose inverter brand has no API?
  2. What resolution is stored and for how long, and what happens to readings during an internet outage?
  3. Which battery brands report state of charge, power, and alarms, and at what interval?
  4. How is expected production modeled, where does irradiance come from, and can the lender’s pro forma be loaded as the baseline?
  5. What does an alarm turn into: an email, a ticket in the platform, or a work order in the CMMS the operations team already uses?
  6. Can the platform report to an incentive program in the format the program requires, such as the SGIP performance data provider format in California?
  7. Is there a public API with documentation, rate limits, and an export path to the owner’s data lake?
  8. Who owns the data and the manufacturer API credentials, and what happens to both if the contract ends?
  9. What is the annual cost per site, all in, for the same ten sites?
  10. If the site later needs control, curtailment, export limiting, or battery dispatch, does the platform grow into it or is that a second product?

Where EnFORM fits, stated plainly

EnFORM is a logger based data acquisition system. Ruggedized field hardware polls inverters, meters, weather stations, trackers, transformers, and BMS over Modbus RTU and TCP, DNP3, MQTT, and REST, validates readings at the edge, stores and forwards them through outages, and feeds a cloud platform that produces performance verification, availability, and reports for owners, lenders, and incentive programs. WATTMORE is an approved performance data provider for California’s SGIP program. It is the right product for a site the owner controls and wants measured independently of the inverter manufacturer, and the wrong product for a portfolio of rooftops where nobody will install hardware.

What EnFORM is not: a portal aggregator. A portfolio of existing rooftops where nobody will install hardware is served today by the aggregators in the table, and EnFORM does not read the manufacturer clouds in their place. It also does not publish list pricing or a public API on its own pages, which the table shows plainly. The strongest reason to choose it is that the same edge hardware and cloud carry a site from monitoring into control, through Intellect Operate, without a change of vendor or a second logger.

Inspection and design tools that are not monitoring platforms

Several products that appear in answer engine lists of monitoring platforms do a different job. Raptor Maps and Zeitview are aerial inspection and asset management platforms that analyze drone and aircraft imagery for module level faults, with Raptor Maps integrating production data from existing DAS providers for its analytics. Clean Power Research’s SolarAnywhere SystemCheck estimates expected production from satellite irradiance without connecting to the site. PVcase and Solargraf are design and proposal tools. All are useful alongside a monitoring platform; none replaces one.
