DNP3
DNP3 is the SCADA protocol, standardized as IEEE 1815, that utilities use to exchange time stamped measurements, events, and controls between a control center and outstations such as a plant controller.
Unlike Modbus, DNP3 carries timestamps and data quality with each point, supports unsolicited reporting of events, and has a secure authentication option. A power plant controller or energy management system typically acts as a DNP3 outstation, publishing the plant’s point of interconnection measurements and accepting the utility’s setpoints and curtailment orders. IEEE 1547 lists DNP3 as one of its three acceptable protocols.
