Data Logger

A data logger is the device on a solar or storage site that polls inverters, meters, and sensors over Modbus or other protocols and forwards the readings to a monitoring platform.

The logger is what makes a data acquisition system independent of the inverter manufacturer: it reads the equipment directly, timestamps each reading, buffers locally through a network outage, and uploads when the link returns. Loggers differ in how many devices they support, which protocols they speak, what sampling interval they hold, and whether they can also write control commands.
