Storage Duration
Storage duration is a battery’s energy capacity divided by its power rating, in hours: a 2 MW, 8 MWh system is a four hour battery.
Duration describes what a battery is for. One and two hour systems suit frequency regulation and short peaks. Four hour systems are the common choice for capacity markets and daily solar shifting. Long duration storage, eight hours and up, targets multi hour outages and overnight supply. The same cells can be configured for different durations by changing the power conversion system, within the C-rate the cells allow.
